Savannah/Tybee Island 2005

River Street is the primary focus of Historic Savannah, with its rows of shops and restaurants

Off in the distance is the Eugene Talmadge bridge, leading to South Carolina and eventually Charleston (by way of I-95 partially)

The majority of Savannah is on a bluff just over 40 feet from the water.  To get down to River Street you can take any one of the many ramps or staircases.  Many of them are quite old and would not pass muster with safety types today.  Now we get some idea how Frodo and Sam felt when Gollum was leading them to Cirith Ungel.

Mercer House is the focus of the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil .  It was here Jim Williams shot his lover, Danny Hansen in a "most unseemly way of coming out of the closet."

Savannah is a deep-water port.  This ship was headed out to sea, obviously with less than a full load.

One of the 'fake' sternwheelers plying the Savannah River (they have modern propellers under the water and the wheel just spins)

This is the location used in the movie Forrest Gump.  Apparently the production company didn't like the existing park benches in Chippewa Square so they pulled up the street and park signs and plonked their own right there in the middle.  CAT busses don't really go by there, as the street is very narrow.  Plenty of tourist 'trollies' go by, though.

The earthworks entrance of Fort Pulaski.  It was here that masonry forts met their doom as rifled cannon breached the walls faster than anyone expected.

The portcullis of the fort

Say hello to my little friend!

Off in the distance a container ship enters the mouth of the Savannah River.  The little white speck is a pre-civil war river lighthouse.

Tybee Island Lighthouse with its restored keeper's quarters and other out-buildings.
